 News

  • Tate St Ives won the 2018 Art Fund Museum of the Year

Art Fund director and Chair of the Judges Stephen Deuchar described the new extention to the museum as 'Deeply inteligent and breathtakingly beautiful'...

  •  Having its toes in the gushing waters of the river Calder, Wakefield's Art Gallery is a superb choice for a cultural day out.   It was also  a well deserved WINNER of the Art Fund Museum of the Year last year,  2017..

An art fund card will earn a good discount for purchases here,  and there are some other treats not too far away also!

  • We are delighted that,  following last years  December  Flood,  our favourite North London Gallery, James Freeman are open and once more thrilling us with some outrageously imaginative works.

From 8th to 28th March 2018,  another show not to miss from James Freeman was  'Makers of Marks'

Drawing and printmaking have much shared history and enjoy a deeply interwoven relationship, but even so, contemporary artists still find new ways of making them play off each other. In 'Makers of Marks' the gallery present three artists who experiment with this relationship against a background of classical references: Daniel Hosego, Sam Branton and Jon Braley.

EDITOR'S MESSAGE

&  ARTS AWARDS

By Linda Whichelow

AMETHYSTINE - named partly after the Gem Stone Amethyst and the Python snake  -  also means  'without alcohol'.

I am not  saying we are all teetotal here.  I wouldn't dare!   But when we produce art ourselves,  we are on the whole often sober.  It becomes almost subconscious.  It is pure innate art that we tend to include here in our pages too.

As Louise Bourgeois, sculptor of the famous Tate Modern monumental Spider 'Mammon'  has said:

''It is a great privilage to have access to the unconscious ........'

We also have enormous respect for craftsmanship but do not often spend time debating:  What is art or craft?    as I recall us doing endlessly at Camberwell..

We simply observe in awe,  how both can have such immense value...  whichever category each item might perhaps fit into.

Named after a Python, so how could we not desire sculptural ceramicist Carolein Smit's expressive MEDUSA. She exhibited as part of 'The Wild Wood' James Freeman Gallery.
'The Arch of Hysteria'' By Louise Bourgeois

Our writers, artists, contributors and interviewees are often encouraged to name two or three immaculately designed products or items that they especially appreciate.  That have perhaps stood the test of time..  That they almost cannot live a meaningful creative life without!!

Voting for our Design awards will open soon.  But for now,  do send us your own list.    You can use the form under 'Contact'  if you wish.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts,

Always,

Linda Whichelow

Sculpture Classes & Short Courses

Passions and even new careers can result from evening or part - time courses,  but the most influential daytime course  discovered 12 years ago,  has to be  Friday afternoon Mary Ward Centre Sculpture classes with Ben Swift.  Taking to clay straight away,  I was soon building larger and larger work,  in a variety of materials and enjoying some wonderfully relaxed,  but creative company..

*The year long 3 day a week Professional Development Sculpture Class at Kensington & Chelsea College was pretty life transforming too as it included two exhibitions.

*Jerwood Nominated Sculptor Richard Trupp started a week long Bronze Casting course at Kingston University,  with a foundry onsite!

Furthermore he is full of the most enthusiastic stories,  as he had been Anthony Caro's assistant..  and those doing more intricate work can even have an assistant to help,  taken from those doing more straight forward projects.  Beware,  some other bronze casting courses do not cover the whole process, but here we even do metal work to perfect our pieces, plus patination when our pieces have cooled down.

Has to be the best short course, in any discipline that I've ever attended! LW
